Moving house in Ireland is rarely as smooth as anyone plans. The difference between a stressful day and a tidy one usually comes down to a handful of small decisions made two or three weeks before.

Start with the boring stuff

  • Book your removals company at least two weeks out
  • Set a redirect on your post for three months
  • Tell the ESB, Bord Gáis, broadband and bin company before move day
  • Confirm parking at both ends in writing if you can

Pack room by room

Start with rooms you don't use daily. Spare room, garage, attic. Label every box by room AND contents – 'kitchen – mugs and tea' beats 'kitchen 4 of 8' every time.

The day itself

Pack a moving-day box: kettle, mugs, tea, toilet roll, phone chargers, change of clothes. Take meter readings before you leave. Walk the new house with the team for ten minutes before they start unloading.
